floating gables

Having purchased a site high on a Diamond Creek hillside, the client hoped to enjoy a view with their new home. In response, this project takes a classic gabled roof and slices it in two, anchoring one gable down into the earth while the other gable floats weightlessly, gazing across the suburban landscape.

Within the house, a rugged concrete slab and stone walls on lower levels provides a sense of drama, which is heightened by darkly atmospheric bathrooms. On upper levels, exposed roof trusses are illuminated with inset skylights to create a light-filled, delightful space. Spatial generosity is provided through simple but elegant detailing, an attic space as well as a grand double-volume veranda.
